The year 1983 marked the debut of AutoCAD as a desktop program, then a year later the launch of the first Autodesk corporate logo featuring the AutoCAD brand.

AutoCAD’s early days

AutoCAD’s graphical capabilities were significantly limited in its early years, because the programs graphics capabilities were very rudimentary. In its launch AutoCAD did not support rasterized vector graphics, and did not support color beyond solid fills, gradients, and fills with blending mode.

But the program’s primary strengths in its launch were in 2D drafting, and the integration of drafting tools. Drawing was a simple process: Create a block, then fill in the block’s area with a color, or add an existing graphic, or edit existing graphics, and add blocks.

File formats in use
The native file format used by AutoCAD is not vendor specific. It can be used by AutoCAD, AutoCAD LT, and other AutoCAD-based applications as well as in the web-based applications of other vendors.

An exchange format standard known as the DWG format (dynamic graphics interchange format) was developed in the 1990s and became widely used.
