Category:AutodeskIn my previous blog post, I described a new approach to workbench design in which workbench components are dynamically created at runtime as the user moves the cursor across the workbench. In this post I will describe a technique I call “point-in-3-d” for rendering of the workbench components, which makes it possible to create three-dimensional images of the workbench from the user’s perspective.

The basic idea is to draw each workbench component from the user’s perspective, as illustrated in Figure 1. Once we have this perspective image, we can simply project it onto a two-dimensional plane to yield the rendering shown in Figure 2. This technique requires some special skills on the part of the artist who is producing the three-dimensional image. In this case, the artist was the author of the blog post I mentioned at the beginning of this post.
The technique works well with a system of “planar faces,” as illustrated in Figure 3. A planar face is defined by an axis aligned parallel to the normal of the face, such that each face can be projected onto a planar surface (for example, a single two-dimensional plane). The faces in a planar face are divided into two types. Component modifiers are added to the base component. You can customize those modifiers to add new ones or remove some or modify some of the existing ones. For example, you can move a component or flip it. You can also add more than one property to the base component. Some of the properties can be linked to a specific base component or a range of base components, and you can toggle their values to test different configurations. Some of the properties can be specified within the property values by simply typing in the required value.
