Development of AutoCAD
AutoCAD is based on the widely used computer-aided design (CAD) system established by Bentley Systems, a company that created AutoLISP, the first widely distributed, object-oriented, programming language. After the end of the 1982 film Tron, the architect James Gosling began contributing to the project with a networked, graphic-based CAD system called NeWS (a predecessor to the X Window system). At that time, Gosling was working for Silicon Graphics Inc., a company that was developing NeWS and providing development services for it.
Fellow programmer Bruce Perens took over the project, and the first version of AutoCAD was completed in 1987. During this time, NeWS was being used for NeWS-based operating systems, such as DECsystem-20 and NeXTSTEP. Autodesk acquired the license for NeWS, and later used its development tools to create AutoCAD. AutoCAD is the result of the marriage of computer-aided design and object-oriented software development techniques.
Early versions of AutoCAD were called “AutoCAD 8” and the oldest version with a release date was AutoCAD 8.0. Today the earliest version is AutoCAD 2010 (and the last is AutoCAD 2016). AutoCAD was originally a DOS application, but after the release of AutoCAD X (1991), and the rise of Windows in the early 1990s, AutoCAD became a 32-bit application and is now mostly Windows-based. AutoCAD X introduced a graphical user interface (GUI), and the first version to use it was AutoCAD X 2.0.
A screen shot of an early version of AutoCAD from 1987.
When AutoCAD was first introduced, it was available as a single-user desktop app that operated on DOS, Unix, or Windows. The software was easy to learn and had a feature set including wireframe drawing and surface modeling.
The first iteration of AutoCAD was called, “AutoCAD 8,” and it was released in 1987. Although it was released on floppy disks, it was not a DOS application, but a DOS application that ran in “embedded mode” on graphics-based terminals called workstations. AutoCAD 8 included a basic toolset,

AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT are designed to operate directly with AutoLISP. AutoCAD LT’s Intergraph CAD Module provides a bridge between AutoCAD LT and Intergraph. Also available on the market is AutoCAD’s Visual LISP, a modification of LISP.
Visual LISP (VL)
Visual LISP (VL) is a modification of the LISP programming language that is used in AutoCAD, where it is called “Visual LISP”.
In Visual LISP, all of the functionality of AutoLISP is supported, along with several new features, such as LISP variables, Autodesk’s Text Object, the ability to draw and edit via object orientation, and object-oriented programming.
VL also includes native code extensions for C, C++, and ObjectARX.
In order to write a Visual LISP program, a user should use the Visual LISP Tools package, which is available as a download on Autodesk Exchange Apps.
Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications (VBA)
AutoCAD is also capable of using Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) to run user-written macros. This capability is useful for people with limited programming experience.
Visual Basic for Applications is a version of Visual Basic developed by Microsoft.
Visual Basic for Applications allows the user to automate common repetitive tasks. For example, when creating floorplans, a user can create a macro to save different floorplans in the file format (.kfg).
ObjectARX is a variant of ObjectAR for AutoCAD. It has been made possible by the merger of ObjectAR and Visual LISP.
AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT are designed to be run directly with ObjectARX. AutoCAD LT’s Intergraph CAD Module provides a bridge between AutoCAD LT and Intergraph.
ObjectARX is available on the market as AutoCAD LT 365 and AutoCAD 365.

What’s New in the AutoCAD?
You can import feedback from paper in a variety of formats (e.g. BOMs, tabulated data, printed color charts). Also, you can import markup assist files from the command line, via an external tool, or from a file on your computer.
Use the new Markup Import dialog to automatically import markup text into your drawings. You can draw new shapes, labels, and text directly in the dialog and pick pre-generated data such as dimensions, location, or text. Or, you can import from an external file.
Send feedback directly to the import dialog. Based on your choice, the feedback is added to the drawing in your style, color, label, dimension, or tabular format.
New text and number styles:
Accent text (Fig. 1):
Toggle accent color with a single click of the mouse.
New text symbols:
For more symbols, see the table below.
Rotation in degrees has been added to the Text Symbol dialog box.
Vertical text alignment:
The Vertical Alignment Property has been added to the Text Symbol dialog box.

Symbol properties have been added.
A new Geometry property has been added to the Properties palette.
A new Editor option has been added. When you edit a symbol, the symbol appears as a dashed-line object so you can edit its shape and position independently of the text style.
Move selection to shape:
Drag a selection in your drawing to place it inside a selected symbol and thus in a selected shape.
The selection can be inside any object, a text symbol, or a shape.
