Conventional LED light engines are typically packaged as an LED light engine package. For example, the LEDs are typically installed inside of a plastic lens. The lens is molded or otherwise affixed to a heat sink, which absorbs and dissipates heat from the LEDs. Heat sinks and/or lenses are affixed to the light engine during fabrication. Light may exit the light engine through a side of the heat sink (e.g., directly opposite a lens in the case of a lensed LED light engine).
Light engine packages may be used in a wide variety of applications. For example, LED light engine packages are used in a variety of outdoor and indoor applications. In one application, a high intensity light engine is used as an entry light for automobiles. For example, these light engines are used as vehicle entry lights. It is desirable for these entry lights to be durable. In addition, these entry lights must be lightweight and have a small footprint.
