Bash script to make a backup of a directory and its subfolders

I would like to use a bash script to make a backup of a directory and all of its subfolders.
The contents of this directory are copied to a back up directory using cp -rp, and this is the script I am using for that (simplified):
#!/bin/bash

DATAFOLDER=`ls -l`
BACKUPFOLDER=”backup.tar.gz”

for d in $DATAFOLDER; do
cp -rp “$d” “$BACKUPFOLDER/$d”
done

If I just use cp -rp, it works fine. However, when I add the “$d” part, I get the error cp: cannot stat `/home/file/backup.tar.gz/home/file/file1.mp4′: No such file or directory. I think that this is because cp is trying to get the current directory. Is there any way to get it to use the actual name?

A:

If you are trying to perform a back up of a single directory /home/file, then the following should work for you:
#!/bin/bash

# Change directory to backup.tar.gz
cd backup.tar.gz

for d in `find. -type d`; do
# To use multiple argument, you should put double quote
cp -rp “$d” “$d”
done

Tinkering with the TAR

My first experience with travel science was when I first went on a business trip. I had seen the commercial infomercials which showed that taking all your meals, snacks and beverages in a Ziploc bag meant that your belly wouldn’t be so bloated and that you would be satisfied longer on the plane. So I started carrying all my meals, snacks and beverages in Ziploc bags.

Before long, I was going to restaurants where my meal would be carried in a Ziploc bag.

Then, someone suggested that I carry a bottle of water

Partial derivative of $\det(xA)$

Let $A$ be an $n\times n$ invertible real matrix. Let $U$ and $V$ be $n\times n$ real matrices. Let $g(t)$ and $h(t)$ be functions of the form $t^r(t+1)^s$ and $t^r(t-1)^s$ where $r,s\in\mathbb R$. What is $g'(1)\cdot \frac{\partial}{\partial t} \det(xA + U + g(t)V) + h'(1)\cdot \frac{\partial}{\partial t} \det(xA + U + h(t)V)$?
This question is inspired by this post.

A:

If $X=\frac{\partial}{\partial t}\log\det(xA + U + tV)$ then $X(xA+U+tV)=A-\frac{U}{t}$ and $X(xA+U)=I$; the $h(t)$ thing is just the normalization.
Differentiating that yields $h'(1)X(xA+U)+h(1)X'(xA+U)=0$, and we obtain
$$\left(h'(1)\frac{1}{t}+h(1)\right)\det(xA+U)=0\quad\Rightarrow\quad \det(xA+U)=0\;,$$
so the answer is $0$.
