I started using LR5 for some editing and it came up with previews of the NEFs. While it is a noticeable speed improvement over previous versions, I still have to say that the workflow of using the RADAR Preview is pretty sad. I didn’t want to start using RADAR as a preview, as opposed to the smart previews. However, I find it more convenient to use the familiar print functions when I am working on a floor-to-floor installation, or on high-contrast images. I really have to push to get the smart previews to behave as I would want. In one of my recent designs, I worked with a lighting tech who was one of the first to experience LR5, and watched him use the RADAR Preview frequently. He was amazed that the image now would be saved with the “smart” Icon, as opposed to a DNG. Therefore, when faced with similar images in the future, he would ask if I used the RADAR Preview. When I told him no, I did it to satisfy the dreaded workflow, he would sometimes say, “I think I have to have the guy over to get these images changed.” I found that to be true. Perhaps that will change for the better, but I can say with certainty that when using the RADAR Preview, I cannot find any preview of these NEFs. I realize that during development we will find updates, and perhaps at that point, this workflow will be a better experience. But since this is a minor (assumed price increase), I don’t think the timing is correct. Moreover, by opting for a RADAR Preview, we become less innovative, as we don’t (or should not) attempt to do things in ways other than those we see used by the Adobe Lightroom team. I think at this point, if there is an intention to use the RADAR Preview, it needs to be optional, just like smart thumbs. Otherwise, I cannot see using it to work on NEFs in a production environment, or as a default function before the consumer release. In fact, if we did this, I would expect to see that consumers might be a little let down.

However, the exciting trend occurring today is the rise of “metro-web”. In this trend, applications evolve and rewrite themselves to make them more powerful, smart, and convenient.
