The goal of residency education in medicine is to develop the physician’s mastery of clinical, cognitive, and technical skills while providing practice experiences to foster professionalism and professional identity formation. Although many medical educators use problem-based learning experiences to teach clinical skills, and career competencies are increasingly being included in residency programs, career competencies continue to be evaluated by the traditional methods of tracking student and physician career choices. This study uses a longitudinal, multiple cohort design to show that problem-based learning activities promote career identity exploration and actual career choice. Throughout the first 4 years of medical school, cohorts of students took part in a problem-based learning curriculum, and 4 years later, their career choices were compared with those of previous year’s cohorts.
