What’s New in the LotkaVolt?

LotkaVolt allows you to run simulation models of the Lotka-Volterra type (see below).

Lotka-Volterra is a simple two-species competition model. In this model, two prey and two predators are competing to eat each other. A species A competes with a species B for a share of prey (say, mice and rats), and a species C competes with a species D for a share of the predators (say, crows and foxes).

To use LotkaVolt, first create an instance of a model by calling Model(). Then, add species, add parameters, add parameters to the species, and finally, run the model. For example, the model below represents a two-species Lotka-Volterra model.

Lotka-Volterra is not a spatial model; it only contains two components. By contrast, NetLogo [4] is a spatial model that is designed to model spatial environments, such as the Earth. Also, NetLogo uses a graphical interface that provides a user interface that is much easier to use than a command-line interface. You can run Lotka-Volterra on a NetLogo simulation with a NetLogo extension called LotkaVoltNetLogo. You can find this extension on the NETHACK website [5].

Lotka-Volterra cannot be a spatial model because it is not able to represent the basic idea of spatial ecology, that of an interaction between two species and one or more spaces. In the case of Lotka-Volterra, there is only one space: the Earth. The Earth is a two-dimensional space with two parameters: temperature (T) and nutrients (N). The Earth’s surface is divided into a two-dimensional grid, and on each grid cell the temperature and nutrients are specified.

Each simulation run generates a series of snapshots. The evolution of species A and species B in the Earth space is followed, and the evolution of populations (number of A and B) is displayed. For example, a snapshot might show that in the last 100 years, the population of the species A has increased by 100% and the population of the species B has increased by 20%.

As with NetLogo, Lotka-Volterra uses the built-in turtle graphics user interface to display the results of a simulation. The user interface supports a variety of user actions, including saving snapshots, freezing the simulation, and saving snapshots to a file. You can also change the simulation’s parameters, such as the population growth rate of A or B.
